Buying a Pram Newborn

Prams and pushchairs are multi-functional, multi-purpose partners of caregivers and parents. They are the co-pilots on the new adventure of your child.

A pram newborn (click the following post) is dedicated to newborns and babies and has the most solid, sturdy carrycot with soft and secure walls.

A pram is equipped with a bassinet, however it can be converted into a stroller travel once the baby is ready.

Safety

The newborns of today are extremely fragile and should be kept as secure as you can. Buying a stroller or pram equipped with safety features will ensure that your baby is secure and safe during their travels. A pram or stroller must have a working break, a 5-point harness (2 shoulder straps; 2 waist straps; and an e-crotch belt) and a wrist tether for the person pushing it. Make sure that the pram you choose meets these standards before you purchase.

Find a pram that allows your baby to ride in the position recommended for lying flat. This position helps support the baby and helps prevent the risk of a dangerous spinal curve that can lead to spinal problems. By keeping the airways open, it reduces the risk for SUID (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or Asphyxiation). Most prams that are used from birth will have a seat unit that will recline into a lie-flat pram mode for infants and convert into a pushchair seat unit for older children.

The suspension of a pram will determine how smooth it rides. A pram that has a lot of spring suspension will be more expensive however, it's worth the extra cost in the event that you plan to use your pram each day for a few years or more.

Always read the instructions and carefully read the warning labels on your stroller or pram. Also, ensure that your stroller is parked in a safe spot free of bicycles, traffic or any other dangers when it isn't being used. You should also remove any bags or other objects from the handles, as they can cause your baby to get caught or suffocate.

A stroller or pram should not be left unattended with a baby inside even if they're asleep. They can get wriggling and become trapped, or the pram may be thrown away and the child could be injured. Hanging bags, or other items on the handles isn't recommended as they can fall and strike your child in the head.

Comfort

imageIt is vital that newborns have the option to lie flat as this aids in lung and back development. Carrycots or cocoons are available on a variety of prams. They create a cozy environment that is a comfortable place for your baby and can be detached easily from the frame. Others, like the egg2's bucket style seat do not recline to lay flat but still offer a comfortable ride to your baby.

Some prams also feature an additional bassinet, infant inset or stroller seat so you can easily switch between sitting and sleeping modes according to your baby's requirements. This is often called a 'best travel stroller system' and is the first option you should test with your baby.

Choose a stroller with two straps for the shoulder, ideally padded, and a five-point safety harness. It must fit your child's body perfectly. Make sure there aren't any gaps or places where fingers could become trapped. Also make sure the buckles are easy for older children to use. It's also worth considering whether you'd prefer a pram with a parent-facing feature or not. It's perfect for keeping an eye on your child, and also helps children feel secure with the familiarity of their parents.

Our parents who tested the product loved the feature of certain prams like the Graco Near2Me, which allows you to raise your baby and lower it at the push of a button. This is a great method to keep eye contact with your baby, and stay in touch, especially when they're sleepy. If you're looking to purchase an appropriate travel system, be sure to check the frame is compatible with your chosen car capsule, as this will save you having to wake them up when changing between pram, car and back.

Convenience

imageWhen buying a pram newborn it is essential to consider the needs of your baby's transportation. Some prams include carrycots, a bassinet or a seat that reclines to an upright position. This is crucial to ensure your baby's spinal development and breathing. You should also check the other accessories that are included in the pram, for instance a footmuff and changing bag. These are essential for keeping your baby warm when it is cold.

Some strollers and prams can be converted to travel systems. You can connect a car pod to the frame with adaptors so that you can move your child from the car seat pram to the pushchair without disturbing them. These can be useful when you live a busy lifestyle or don't have a large enough car boot to accommodate pram capsules, but it's worth keeping in mind that your child must be old enough and able to sit up independently before you can switch between the car capsule and pram.

Another feature to keep an eye on is the possibility of raising and lowering the infant's seat from a low to high setting, which allows you to maintain eye contact with them and keeps them close to you, which our parent tester found was very useful for her 10-month old boy! A good example is the Graco Near2Me that can be adjusted to lower the seat, allowing your little one to 'glide towards you at the press of an button and maintain constant eye contact.

Also, ensure that your pram newborn has a sturdy base with wheels that are able to handle potholes and bumps. Ensure that you are able to fold it up easily and make sure the safety harness is functional, fits comfortably and securely (five-point instead of three-point) and is adjustable as your child grows. You will also be able to store shopping and changing bags inside the basket beneath (although keep in mind that loading the pram with too much weight could cause it to tip over). If you're not sure what to choose, try out some different models at your local retailer.
