After Toto IV, the band's fortunes started to plummet. David Hungate left the band to focus on his solo career. The band was dominated by drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in the wake of drug charges and the group continued to perform as a trio, which included Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.
Despite the turbulence, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation however, which was not as successful as IV. However, the band

Line-up
The band's third album, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet style of the previous albums. It was a more ferocious, consistent effort with an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. Its edgier sound was indicative of the maturation of group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's greater ability on the drums and a more mature, confident vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard skills were also more sophisticated, sharper and less akin to previous efforts.
After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live show in Amsterdam which was released as a set of two CDs called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a brand new studio album a few months after and embarked on a world tour to help promote it. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to discover songs that had never been recorded prior to. The album was released as a double-album titled Then & Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band that did not include any single song that had the word "A" in its title. It also included one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".
